The Purple Heart is America’s oldest military decoration still awarded to our nation’s service members. First established by George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, it is presented to those who have been wounded or killed as a direct result of enemy action while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Unlike medals earned through recommendation or achievement, the Purple Heart is a solemn recognition of sacrifice—a lasting reminder of the courage, resilience, and selfless devotion of those who have shed blood in defense of our freedoms. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
